Why we are a green organisation
3M recognized early that doing business in new, smarter ways would not only create a more viable company—it could also enable us to meet our social responsibilities and reduce our impact on the environment, two objectives integral to ethical business conduct. Sustainability is a natural extension of our values.
Today, we’re building on more than 70 years of practices that support economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Our vision is simple: we want to help meet the needs of society today while respecting the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
3M first undertook its groundbreaking “3P” program (Pollution Prevention Pays) in 1975, and estimates that 3P innovations since then have reduced the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 72 percent, and prevented more than 3.5 billion pounds of pollution.
3M established a new set of sustainability goals in 2010 to be attained by 2015. Chief among those goals are reduction of volatile air emissions by 15 percent and solid waste by ten percent, and a 25-percent improvement in energy efficiency. The energy-efficiency objective already has been achieved and exceeded.
In Singapore, the 3M Singapore Woodlands Plant was one of the first existing industrial buildings in Singapore to be conferred the Green Mark Award (Gold) by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in 2010. Apart from green features such as a heat recovery system, the recognition was achieved with 3M’s own environmentally friendly products, such as 3M™ Window Film. In2012, the 3M Tuas Plant was also conferred a Green Mark Award from the BCA.
