Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Green Programme was started in 1998 with a 3year Darwin Initiative (UK Govt.) grant enabling the establishment of a new Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (CBCF) to implement the Programme and island-wide faunal and floral surveys and selected site inventories.
It was successively extended to include GIS mapping and development of site management plans for more than 4 new protected areas and diverse other wildlife/habitat research, protection, monitoring and restoration schemes.
Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Green Programme has a several sustainable capacity-building and educational activities such as green biodiversity conservation workshops, teacher’s and forest warden training (including trainer training) programmes, education materials production, networking, fund-raising and advocacy, have also been conducted.
Widely regarded as the single excellent example of effective and sustained conservation action anywhere in the Philippines; not least because Cebu (with original forest cover being reduced to a few isolated patches totaling less than 0.06%), has also been generally regarded as a ‘lost cause’, even though it’s obvious importance as the most distinct sub-centre of endemicity within the West Visayas Faunal Region – almost certainly the world’s single highest conservation priority area in Endemic Bird Area (EBA) terms.
