Why we are a green organisation

CapitaLand strives to be an environmentally-sustainable real estate developer and aims to be at the forefront of the industry in terms of green buildings and environmental awareness. As part of CapitaLand’s efforts towards environmental sustainability, the Group has set a long-term target to reduce energy and water usage by 20% per square metre (for all the properties that it operates) by 2020, using 2008 as the benchmark. An environmental tracking system is also used to monitor the Group’s properties worldwide to ensure that it is on track to meet this target.

On green buildings, CapitaLand has set a goal to achieve at least the Singapore Building & Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark GoldPLUS status for all Singapore projects and green certification and above by local authorities or organisations approved by the World Green Building Council for all its projects overseas. For its commitment to green buildings, CapitaLand was accorded the Green Mark Champion Award during BCA Awards 2012. To date, CapitaLand has received 72 BCA Green Mark awards including 10 BCA Green Mark Platinum projects and several other foreign green building ratings including six LEED, two Green Star, one LEED India, one China Star, one CASBEE, and one BREEAM for its projects in Singapore, China, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam and United Kingdom.

CapitaLand’s robust sustainability framework has also been recognised by various international accolades. CapitaLand was ranked in the 2013 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World (Global 100) by Corporate Knights. It is also listed in the Sustainability Yearbook 2013 by RobecoSAM, an investment specialist in Sustainability Investing, and KPMG International. CapitaLand is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) 2012/2013 and Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index 2012/2013 and named the Asian Sector Leader in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Report 2012. CapitaLand also won the ASEAN Award for Most Admired Enterprise for CSR (Large Company), and Outstanding Corporate Citizen in China by Corporate Citizen Committee of China Social Workers last year.

Adding to its significant achievements in sustainability, CapitaLand also achieved ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications for its Environmental, Health and Safety Management System across countries with its investment properties. It is the first and largest real estate company in Asia to achieve such certification across 15 countries in Asia Pacific and Europe. The Group expanded its scope of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification last year to include Belgium, Germany, Indonesia and Spain.
